The Door In The Wheat

» Cinematic teaser in four shots, shot on 35mm film — overcast prairie daylight, muted Kodak-print grade, soft grain, a touch of handheld; indistinguishable from real filmed footage. SHOT 1 (setup): a boy about ten, freckles and a hand-me-down canvas jacket, walks a fence line through ripe wheat with his border collie — and stops: a weathered farmhouse door stands upright in the middle of the field, no frame, no wall, paint peeling to bare gray wood. He circles it once; only wheat on both sides. SHOT 2 (turn): he lifts the rusted latch and swings it open — the same wheat visible through the doorway — but the collie's ears prick at something beyond it, and the dog bolts through the open door and does not come out the other side; the wheat around the door bows outward in a slow ring. SHOT 3 (escalation): he sprints around the door twice, slaps his thigh, claps for the dog — nothing — while the wind climbs and the door begins to swing shut on its own, the light through the narrowing gap turning from gray noon to warm amber dusk. SHOT 4 (hard cut): he takes three running steps and dives through the closing gap as the door slams — smash cut to black on the slam.
