SEVEN MINUTES

The sea has already drawn back off the beach and people are standing on the sand filming it. In an emergency call centre a dispatcher picks up a call from a nine-year-old boy alone in a ground-floor flat, and she has seven minutes to talk him up eleven flights of stairs. She never hangs up. Neither does he.
